The Little Mermaid was one of my favorite movies when I was a tiny Kane, so my jaw dropped when I saw that Lego was making two Mermaid sets, as well as a handful of other Disney Princess sets.
I would have gotten a Cinderella set or the other Mermaid set, but they seemed to provide too little for the price and drew too much from the early Friends concept of overly colorful and easy build sets.
The set comes with Ariel, fish friend Flounder, a gate construction, a small plant section, and a section with treasure chest and treasures. A good water themed addition to my Summer Collection.
Our Ariel is a Friends-like minidoll, but she is very well done, so I don't have any complaints. She is entirely unique, down to her face print and hair mold, which are only seen in the other Little Mermaid set. Her torso has her characteristic purple top printed on it. The nicely molded mermaid tail has a stud opening on the bottom so she can be placed just about anywhere.
Flounder is wonderfully printed and molded. His chubby little body and tiny fins match his movie likeness and the blue printing completes Ariel's shy companion. See below for an additional picture of him.
This is the main portion of the set and makes use of a lot of pink and purple bricks. The pearl gold gates can open for various creatures to swim through. Clamped to the top is a gold trident, which looks like it would belong to Ariel's father, King Triton.
As extra decoration to this section, there is a white clam shell with a silver pearl (not white I assume because white on white wouldn't look good), a small yellow flower, and two green plants. These plants are in a handful of sets but are new to 2014. I thought they would be a bendy plastic, but they are instead hard and therefore a little less appealing to me.
Atop this little sea construction sits our treasure chest, which contains three "treasures". We get pearl gold binoculars, a pretty translucent blue gem, and a music notes sheet which is only in two other Friends sets (I own both) and 2013's Friend Advent Calendar. It would have been nice to see a single fork in the treasure box, but Lego has only released forks in full kitchenware packs.
This last little sea section rounds out the set with a sea plant and large trans-purple starfish. This star fish piece has largely only been seen in late 90's Belville sets and interestingly the only other set it appears in trans-purple is a 2005 Belville set called The Mermaid Castle.
Nice colorful set of extras we get, my favorites being the binoculars and the trans-blue round tile.
