40052- Springtime Scene

I wasn't going to get this little set, but I was at the Chicago Watertower Place branch and they were just sitting by the register... In the future, I would like to have a small area set up with seasonal Lego scenes, so this is a good start for spring.  Plus, I can always use more tree models for my animations.

Our male minifig is sporting blue pants and a hoodie printed torso (which I'm quite fond of).  I think though, when you combine his printed eyebrows with his smirk, he looks a little sinister.  His baseball hat is a nice touch and while I don't really like the lime green colour, it does match the bit of printed shirt showing on the torso.  See below for alternate pictures.

The female minifig is wearing a lovely orange outfit, with her torso showing a kind of flowing shirt that ties in the back.  Very spring-like.  She has one of the longer hair pieces- a dark brown long ponytail with her bangs falling to either side.  See additional images below for the back torso print.

In this set, we get three little plated areas, one of which is a white bench with green shrub elements and a flower piece   The bench is pretty basic, but the white colour adds to the spring theme.  The flower cluster is made up of pink and orange flowers-  not the standard old flower pieces  but the type I'm seeing more and more and which might be replacing the old altogether.  I like the old a little better as they looked more like flowers to me and they came in fours when only three is needed on a flower piece so there was always an extra.  But overall, it's a nice little area for our minifigs to relax in.

The second area consists of two white fence pieces and a model of a little tree.  What makes the tree so nice are the light and dark pink flowers (made of special lego flower pieces and basic studs) and the cherries that are hanging of off it.  I'm especially a fan of the cherries as I love Lego food (and normal food).  A kind of odd thing about the tree is that to hold up one of the branch pieces, a red holder is used.  My question is why the piece couldn't have been brown to match the tree and seem a bit more inconspicuous?  The white fence pieces we get don't match up to make great corner pieces, but they still look good and are great to have for other Lego projects.  I'm not sure I've actually ever seen them before, but brickset has just informed me that they've been in 50 sets, although nearly always brick buckets.  See below for an image of the tree from above.

Our third and final plated area is one with a fountain, fence piece  and flower cluster.  Again, the three-flower cluster is made of those newer flower pieces (officially called bracelet upper part).  The small fountain is a nice little model for all the small touches.  The base is a ridged cylinder and we have a couple blue elements in the fountain to give the appearance of water, along with the translucent blue flame piece that serves as water here.  The fountain is also home to my favorite part of this whole set: a green frog that can hop around his area and the set to his froggy hearts content.

I find myself enjoying building new sets partly to find out what extras I'm going to get.  I've a separate container for them and would rarely use them, but they make me feel like I'm getting something for free and who doesn't like free things (especially free Lego)?  Notable from this set is a corner brick, a flower stem piece, and a cherry.

All around, this is a nice little set.  I'm really happy with the tree and fountain, and of some of the special elements included, like the three fence pieces  cherries, and Lego frog.  Can't wait to see what future seasonal scene await us later this year.
