Both this set and the series idea in general are fantastic. Some of the Friends animals seem way too big for me to incorporate in regular Lego life, but the concept that this little animal is now placed only in the context of his happy little home somehow makes the animal seem more realistic. Turtles are one of my favorite animals, so I was overjoyed to have a genuine Lego turtle and a nice little home for him. Yes, him. Although provided with a purple bow, a hole in Mr. Turtle's head for said bow, and the knowledge that the Friends theme is aimed at girls, my turtle is a dude.
The turtle figure itself is much better than I expected. He's smaller than I would have assumed from the packaging, being roughly the size of a Lego cat. He is printed with several appropriate brown spots and vaguely blue eyes. Since he is hallowed out, he can sit and snap into place on Lego studs.
Turtle's home, this oasis, is cute and simple, which makes it winning. Outside, we have a closable white clam shell complete with pink jewel. The plates beneath the hut suggest some water leading up to sand, so that the turtle can swim right out of the sea, up the hut's ladder, and into his home. I like the use of what I call "spyglass" pieces on the side of the hut, providing a open-slatted, tiki look. The large palm leaf capping the oasis connects the home with nature and is a nice detail. My only small disgruntlement with the hut is that the small ladder is at such steep angle and rests on the watery plate, not the floor; meaning that making the turtle go up the ladder looks very awkward. However, a longer ladder would have make the hut look too small, so things are really best how they are. A super set for a super turtle.
